Air-con systems, which type suits your needs?

A central air-con system is the type that you see in most commercial buildings and apartment complexes. They have exhaust boxes that are mounted on the exterior of the building and connected to smaller units inside the building that release the cooled air into the rooms and house the electronic control systems. You can also check out our buyers guide to purchasing air conditioning units.

Central air cooling systems can be purchased and installed through dealer and service networks that specialise in air cooling solutions. An installation team will be able to offer you guaranteed workmanship and take care of any future maintenance with the unit. Central air-con systems can also be connected to existing heat ducts and convert them into cooling ducts for your home. Central systems are the ideal solution and they are the top choice for those that have the budget to accommodate the price tag.

gmc-5The second option is to go for a unit that is mounted to the windowsill of the room, with the rear of the unit hanging out in the open air. These units are compact, lightweight they are efficient and effective solutions that are more cost effective than whole-home central systems but are limited to one room per unit.

The window sill unit allows you to install the air conditioning unit easily by yourself just by opening a window. These units will vibrate, so it’s best to re-enforce your window-sill to prevent it being damaged, they offer pragmatic cooling solutions that can be moved from room to room as well, as long as there is a window frame to support it and an electrical outlet to run it from.

The third option is for a portable unit. These units are incredibly powerful for their size and come in capacities that can offer a cooling solution for spaces up to 50 square meters. They are mobile, usually with castors mounted to the underside and can be wheeled between rooms in the home or office.

Output and BTU

Sizing your air-con unit is a critical part of the selection process in choosing the right cooling unit for your application. Air-con units are measured in aircon1British Thermal Units (BTU) This rating will allow you to match up the power output of the unit to the size of the room, or rooms that you need cooled.

The BTU measurement is the way that your determine the right system and going over, or under the recommended BTU capacity for the room you need to cool will result in a negative effect on the system’s ability to cool the room or rooms effectively.

If you have any issues in selecting the right power output, then seek advice from an internet forum or from professionals that have expertise with installation and maintenance of air-con systems. They will input the size of your room into a calculator and then model the best capacity for the room or rooms that you need cooled. Experienced air-con specialists can even design entire central cooling systems for your home and model the airflow for you on computer programs, allowing you to see the way the air will circulate through the rooms.

Maintaining your aircon and troubleshooting problems

Maintaining your air-con is an essential part of ensuring that the unit has a long operating life that provides consistent cooling efficiency. Maintenance can be taken care of by yourself on some smaller portable and window sill based units, however, if you need to conduct any maintenance on a central air system, it is probably best to contact the people that installed it, or a local air-con specialist that can service the unit for you and keep it in running order.

Air-cons are not perfect machines; they do come across faults during their operations and don’t be surprised if at some stage your unit experiences some sort of issue that calls for your attention to fix it. In this case, if you own a portable or window sill unit, take it through to your service center and have the professionals look at it. However, if you have a central air system, then you will need a call-out from a maintenance professional, this may be a bit expensive but they will be able to identify and fix the problem correctly the first time. Trying to do the job yourself will end up just costing your more time and more money when the technicians have to undo the attempts you have made on fixing it yourself.

There are a number of common faults that occur in three types of air-con systems. The coils, fans, compressors and pumps all have mechanical parts that can fail. Leaks are the most common of all reasons for loss of operating efficiency in your air-con. The most serious problems come in the form of leaks.

Major leak issues

The cause of a leak can come from a variety of sources. If you have a fixed unit central system, then the first question to ask yourself is, do you know the company that installed the system? Or was it already there in the home you purchased? If you do know the dealers and technicians, then give them a call to come out and look at it. In the case of a new system, it will most likely be either an installation fault or a faulty component.

Checking for air-con condenser Leaks

All air conditioners have a condenser with coils attached to it, its primary task being circulating cooled air and enabling dissipation of stale air and heat. If the air-con is leaking, it would mean that the condenser coils may also be leaking on the inside of the units housing, or even more serious problems are inherent to the situation and need to be addressed immediately by an experienced technician in order to be returned to their optimal operating capacity. If you suspect a possible leak, then you can do a quick visual inspection of the unit to make sure that this is the true source of the issue you are experiencing.

Unplug the unit and ensure that it is not in operation. The condenser unit is usually found t the rear of the unit, enclosed in the housing. Locate the condenser and make sure that it has not covered in dirt. Dry off the coil with a paper towel and then look for any moisture or liquid to form on the coils again, this is a sign of a definite leak and you should notify your technician immediately.

Other common faults, or problems with air-con systems can be;

Forming of Ice

When an air-con unit is in the process of cooling, de-humidification also occurs simultaneously to prevent ice formation on the cooling coils. To check this you can remove the front grill of the unit and look at the coils. If you find ice formation on them, then your air conditioning unit is not functioning properly. You may need to call a technician to come and fix it on site if it is a central system, if it is a window sill unit, or portable, then you can take it down to your local service center.

Air leakage

Sometimes your system might develop air leakage and if it is the case then you will find tiny droplets of water clinging on the front side edges of the unit. You can test this by running your air-con unit for about half an hour and do an inspection after that. If there is an air leakage then you will find water droplets on the base of the unit., time to call in the technician.

Pipe blockage

If the drain pipes that are located at the back are choked or blocked, then drainage will be impaired. There will be accumulation of water at the back of the unit and it will start to leak. You will need to get your unit overhauled immediately. Periodical maintenance of your unit and cleaning of the pipes is recommended to avoid this problem from occurring.

Blocked Trap Floor

A pipe located at the back of the unit connected to a trap floor that serves to drain the water out of the unit. If the floor is blocked then it will be difficult for you to check it on your own so you will need professional help.

Installing an air conditioning system is a fantastic idea in the warm summer season to keep your home as cool as it can possibly be.

_jkp5969

When the summer heat, powerful and piercing during the day and relentlessly uncomfortable at night, it may be time to get online and start your search for an air-conditioning system. Having the luxury of an air-con in your home will greatly improve your quality of life in every room of your home. Here’s some tips for finding the right air-con solution for you and your home;

When you’re looking to make a purchase of an air conditioning unit, do plenty of research ahead of time. You want to make sure that you do some of your own due-diligence to discover if your home can support an air-con system. You do not want to overload circuit breakers or damage window frames if they are not able to support the weight of the air conditioner. Find the perfect place in your home that will optimise the performance of the system and allow it to cool the rooms in your home effectively.
Air cons are designed to work in enclosed, sealed environments, meaning that they should operate with the windows and doors of the room closed. If windows are left open, even just a bit, it will make your air-conditioners operation inefficient and less effective, it would be pointless to even have your air conditioner running. Optimize your air conditioner by drawing your curtains to stop the heat from the sunlight entering the room, this assists the aircon by lowering the room temperature a few degrees allowing the air-con to use less energy to get the job done.

Remember to keep the doors in your home closed if you are using a full-home system, if you leave them open, it will let cool air out of your house when you have your air-conditioner running. You want to limit your trips in and out of the house to maximize the amount will air that is being circulated throughout your home.

These are just a few tips for you to assist in the better selection and enhanced operation of your air-conditioner. You want to make sure you are armed with the knowledge you need to make an informed purchase decision as a consumer. You should have a basic understanding of the operating principles of an air-con, how it should be installed and maintained in your home and the start-up costs for both equipment and installation, as well as operating costs in the future.

Before you get onto your search for your unit, have a look at some interesting facts about air-conditioners and a list of common pitfalls to avoid and start your air-con experience off the right way.

Four fun facts about air-conditioners

As we’ve discussed, you can’t think about spending summers without air conditioners nowadays. Air conditioners have become a way of life and without them, life would be pretty uncomfortable in the relentless summer heat. One of the best benefits we get from air-cons is the cool comfort you enjoy inside your home during summer when temperatures hover on higher extreme. Commerce and industry also rely on air-conditioning to keep their operations running, industries that require air-conditioning are, food preservation and processing, pharmaceutical production and storage, pathogen control and several other commercial and industrial interests are highly dependent on air conditioning.

fun

Without the vital support of air conditioners, none of the above can continue their operations. Computers and server rooms are the lifeline of various processes and utilities and they don’t function well without the comfort of air-conditioning. These machines essentially require the support of air cons to keep them working properly and limit overheating that causes breakdowns and lost operating time. Now that we know how critical air-conditioning is in our daily lives, here are 4 fun facts about air-conditioners that you might be interested in knowing.

  1. The first air conditioner was not designed for improving human comfort. The first modern air-conditioner was invented by Willis Carrier in the year 1902 for use by a publishing company in Brooklyn. After Carrier graduated from Cornell University, he was employed by Buffalo Forge Company where he was tasked with finding a solution for heat and humidity issues that Sackett-Wilhelms Lithographing and Publishing Company were experiencing in their printing room. The machine he invented managed to keep the humidity and temperature very low thus preventing the printing paper from contracting or expanding. Carrier was well versed with the techniques of heating objects using steam and he used his knowledge to reverse the process. Contrary to the process of sending air over hot coils he sent it over cold water-filled coils. The air that passed through these coils became cooler and greatly helped in controlling temperature and moisture in the environment.

  1. The film Industry was one of the first adopters of air-con technology. Air-cons were installed in theaters all across America and Europe and completely changed the viewing experience for movie-goers. As cinemas improved their audience environments, the rise of Hollywood began as people used the cinema to get out of the summer heat, which led to the Hollywood theme of summer being the blockbuster season.

  1. Air conditioners have changed the corporate and education landscapes as well. Previously, extreme heat used to cause a shutdown of schools and offices as no one was able to concentrate on their work in the scorching hot periods of the day between 10am and 2pm. The introduction of air-conditioners to learning institutions, corporate and industrial environments have led to higher productivity from students, scholars, and businesses.
  1. Air-conditioners have made certain previously inhabitable environments all across the world, livable. The introduction of cool air systems in places like Dubai and India have made life a lot more tolerable for its citizens. This has, in turn, boosted real estate prices and the local economies of the countries as they are able to produce and increase the country’s GDP. Harsh desert conditions used to mean that these countries would not be able to work during large parts of the daytime, now with air-con systems, there are thriving tourist industries in all of these countries as travelers visit and explore what they have to offer in the comfort of air-conditioned environments.

10 Air Conditioning Mistakes to Avoid with your new air conditioner

While using to air conditioners to increase the comfort level in warm climates you tend to increase your energy bill. Air conditioning unit can consume up to 70% of your overall electricity usage and can significantly weigh on your house-hold budget. By adapting to economical usage levels and avoiding inefficiency mistakes, you can save power and money.

Here are our top 10 Air Conditioning Mistakes to avoid if you want efficient and effective operation from your system.

  1. One of the biggest mistakes you can make is buying an air conditioning unit that is too big in capacity for your space required. This increases energy consumption and adds to your monthly bill, while not really adding any advantage in terms of cooling your home.
  2. Installing your unit near a heat source such as a furnace or sunny area can severely affect the cooling effectiveness and efficiency of your air-con. The unit will have to work harder and in the process, it will  consume more energy.
  3. When installing your air conditioner system, clear the area behind its rear passage and make sure that it is not obstructed by shrubs and foliage. If the passage is blocked, then you will experience ventilation issues and condenser coils will get clogged with dirt, making them ineffective.
  4.  Undertake regular maintenance schedules for your air-con unit to keep it working efficiently. Ignoring this aspect may reduce its operating life and drop efficiency.
  5. Do not run an air-con unit when you are not at home, this is a senseless waste of energy. Air-cons are able to cool down the air in your home within minutes of you switching them on, so save the energy and your budget and don’t leave them running while you are away.
  6. If you have a central air-con system in your home, then do not close any duct vents in rooms that are not being used. This changes the operating pressure of the system and can cause it to break down or reduce its operating lifespan. If you do not want the system to operate in a specific room, then call an air-con expert for some advice before you do so.
  7. Adjust the level of cooling as the day progresses. The raging heat of midday is quite a bit stronger than in the morning or late afternoon, program your air-con to operate at the right temperature during the day and save on the energy the system uses during its daily operation cycle.
  8. Avoid keeping energy emitting appliances like tv’s, stereos, lamps and other such appliances near the unit as their heat can cause the thermostat to get incorrect temperature readings and cause ineffective operation of the system.
  9. Add a fan into the mix. While an air-con is effective at cooling the air, any boost you can give to circulating that air in your home can help reduce the energy required by your air-con system. Keep your fans running and save on the expense of cooling your home this summer.
  10. Exhaust fans are not necessary for air-conditioned environments, they actually work against and aircon and disrupt the circulation of the cooled, sometimes exhausting that instead of the spent air. So make sure that exhaust fans are limited to use in the bathroom only.

Following these tips will give you extended life on your air-con system and greatly reduce your energy requirements for cooling your home. When you have your air-con installed and ready to go, make sure you follow them to start your air-con experience off with the right operating habits.

When you have settled on a unit that suits your home and your budget, then it’s time to get the installation sorted out. Installing air conditioners fairly simple as long as you have some help from a qualified technician that guarantees their workmanship.

You do not want to try and install an air conditioner on your own as you’ll likely find that it will cause an accident and lead to personal injury, or perhaps cause a short in the electrical system of the house. Choose the right technician to get the job done correctly the first time, the technicians should be qualified and experienced and come with plenty of positive feedback from past clients with testimonials and reviews on their work.

The evolution of air-conditioning and types of air-cons

history

Source : velocityairconditioning.com

Air conditioners have gone through several changes over the decades. Even before a decade ago, air conditioners were considered as a luxury to be only accessed by the elite. A huge population stayed away from fitting an AC unit in their homes due to its high price and inefficient energy consumption. But things have changed largely over the last few years and today you can see many different models of air conditioning units and almost all households own a system. Prices have also come down considerably, making the technology accessible to average citizens. Advanced technological features are added to modern systems to make these devices ever more user-friendly and optimize their performance.

Today’s air conditioners are environmentally friendly and highly efficient when compared to their predecessors. The components of air-con units are the compressor, condenser coil, evaporator coil, and the metering devices. These components come together to offer cooling solutions in various capacities that can cool anything from a family home to a large commercial office park.

Central air conditioning systems are the most efficient type of air conditioners available, they can maintain a consistently cool temperature in a wide space. They are incredibly effective, silent in operation and offer the best cooling solution. However, not all homes require a complete solution and they may only require one of the rooms in the home, such as the bedroom to be cooled. In this case, look at a window mounted unit or a portable solution.

A split AC system basically contains three major parts. First is the outdoor unit, which can be fixed outside the walls. There is a compressor as well as condensing coils attached to this unit and these coils are filled with the refrigerants, usually Freon. When the fan blows the air over it, thermal energy is getting released and the Freon gas is getting cooled. The indoor-mounted unit also has coils and blower inside the furnace, and the air is getting circulated through the coil and send out through the ducts into the room.

Another comfortable option for homeowners to choose is portable air-con units. These are highly mobile and can be moved around to any room in the home. You can use it in your living room during the mornings and then move it into the bedroom at night. These units are becoming increasingly popular especially among individuals who live in rented flats and apartments. Portable air-con units are comparatively cheaper and are available in several different designs and brands. These air-cons are easy to maintain and come backed with warranty’s and service centers should you experience any operating issues with your portable air-con unit.

Another common air-conditioning system is the ductless air conditioner, also known as the mini split air-con. This air conditioner system works well in small rooms without any attics or overhead space. It’s a very great option for enclosed spaces as there is no need for pipes connecting to a box outside the window. The ductless mini split air-cons also have the same components as the split 3 air conditioning systems. The installation of these units is easy and they also have a near-silent operation with high reliability, demanding less maintenance and replacement of components over its operating lifespan.

All air-con systems still need to be properly maintained over their operating lifetimes to ensure their efficient operation and reduce the chances of the system breaking down and needing repairs that can be costly. A service center will be able to offer you a regular check up every season to make sure that your system is operating at maximum efficiency.

Getting started with air-conditioning

Air-conditioning units sell for many reasons and people are constantly always looking to upgrade to a bigger and better air conditioning unit for their home but what people fail to realize is that bigger is not always better when it comes to different Air-conditioning units. When you are purchasing an Air-con unit, here’s a little bit more information on the air conditioning units and the size that you need to make sure that you’re not over purchasing capacity that you don’t need, or getting air-conditioner that is not going to work in the environment like you had planned.

The size of the air-conditioner that you want to put into your home is an important factor in choosing the right air-con system. The bigger the unit, the bigger the area that you have to cool. When an air conditioning unit starts working it pulls the moisture out of the air in your home and exhausts it outside. This is why you need to ensure that you have proper exhaust ventilation to the outside of your home, your installation technician should be able to show you the right place for the unit to be installed.
If you decide to go with a central air-con, you are going to need to remember that you purchase a cover for the external unit for the winter season to prevent unnecessary environmental exposure to the unit. This is very important to remember when you have an outside air-conditioning unit.
Another factor that will determine the size of your air-conditioning unit, is how big of an area you need to keep cool. Speak to an air-con professional to get the best advice on the system that would best suit the size and design of your home.

Choosing the right brand

brand

There are many different manufacturer brands of air-cons. Deciding on the right one for your home can be a daunting experience that can have many pitfalls. If your budget is tight, finding a reputable brand with a quality product may seem like an impossible task, but we assure you that you can find a solution to meet your cooling needs for your home.

The brand of a manufacturer that you decide to select should be researched before you commit to any purchase. Take some time to have a look online at potential systems and then look for their reviews from people that have purchased and are using the system. A good online retailer should have a good variety of brands with solid descriptions, specifications, and information on all of their systems and they should offer an option for you to call into their offices if you need further advice on your purchase decision.

Often you may find that the leading manufacturers may load the pricing of their products due to the reputation that they have in the market. Their brand presence and market share are prominent and they are viewed in the consumer’s eye as the top-of-mind choice. However, there are often lesser known manufacturer brands that still provide a quality product, that may even exceed the operating efficiency of more popular units.

Base your decision on facts and testimonials with a thorough review of the product you are interested in, it’s best to call around to a few dealers to get their thoughts on the products and solutions that they offer and then compare their impressions on the products you are interested in.

Another great strategy for purchasing an air-con system is to purchase technology that has been on the market for a few years already. This is a great idea because you can search for more past reviews and often, you will find that dealers are willing to drop their price in order to move the older models and make room for new stock that has just been released. This means you can get a good deal on a trusted system.

How air-cons can improve your health and quality of life

quality

Air-cons offer a clean air solution for those people that suffer from allergies and other breathing disorders such as asthma. Mold, animal dander, and pollen can cause violent allergic reactions or respiratory problems. Air-conditioning reduces the humidity in the air that is the cause of mold and damp, as well as an ideal breeding ground for parasites such as dust mites and other viral pathogens that consider this an ideal environment to thrive in and it is these conditions that make for a living nightmare to anyone with asthma or allergies.

Asthmatics are very sensitive to environmental air changes and can instantly feel a drop in air quality. Using an air-con system inside your home can help your regulate a cool even, dry climate as well as filter the air of any debris or pollen that may upset your condition. To ensure that you get years of clean air living, ensure that your unit is regularly maintained by professionals so that you never have to worry about an unclean air-environment.

Portable aircons

_jkp5998

Portable aircons, free-standing air-con units are an ideal, mobile solution for your cooling needs. They come in a variety of capacities and manufacturer brands, here are some tips for selecting the right unit for your application.

Portable air-cons are great in their versatility; they are easily moved from room to room in the house allowing you to control the temperature wherever you are. They offer quiet operation that has noise levels comparable to a low drone below 45 decibels, which is about the same volume as a whispered conversation.

Cooling power is a critical specification to take into account when you purchase your portable unit. Portable units are measured in British Thermal Units or BTU’s. This output must match the size of the room that you are in need of cooling, failure to get the right sized unit may result in ineffective cooling of the room.

Factoring in price

Pricing is important for your new air-con system, whether you decide on a central, whole home system, or are looking at a portable unit, the price of the unit may be the final deciding factor on what brand and size of unit that you decide on. You need to focus on finding the best value for money air-con solution for your home that has a balance between, reliability, efficiency and cost.

Your best option is to call your local dealer and get some advice on a system for your home. A good consultant will be able to understand your situation and offer you the best solution in terms of operations and price.

When you have all of the knowledge of the products on hand, you will be in a position to make an informed purchase decision on the right air-con system for your home that meets your needs and your budget.

Airconditioner (AC) units are fast becoming the most sought after commodity for homeowners, businesses, and schools across South Africa, and the world for that matter. They are seen as the perfect solution to helping people remain comfortable in variable weather conditions and come in all shapes and sizes to suit the needs of just about anyone.

There are many people out there that view air conditioners as being full of pros without any cons, and indeed, there are numerous benefits to owning an AC system. However, at GMC Aircon, even as a company that specialises in air-conditioning, we know that nothing is without its disadvantages. Therefore, in the spirit of fairness and objectiveness, here are the pros and the cons of air-conditioners.

Pros

Cool air

The outstanding benefit of AC systems is, of course, their ability to cool the air in a room and provide comfortable conditions for everyone in it. No matter what type of aircon  you have, it will be able to fulfill this purpose.

Air conditioning units are able to provide and maintain cool air by taking heat out of a room and moving it elsewhere. With high temperatures caused by the sun and appliances, and heat put out by humans, the air regulated by air conditioners is invaluable.

Reduced humidity

With increased temperature comes increased humidity – that’s that sticky feeling you get when you are too warm. Most air-conditioner systems come with the ability to keep rooms ‘dry’ so that humidity can be reduced without a room becoming over-cool. Human’s function best when humidity is around 50% – our air conditioners can help achieve this.

Quality air

Cool air is one thing, but being comfortable requires more than coolness; it requires quality air. The air that an air-conditioner puts out is regulated and filtered to reduce allergy-causing bacteria, dust, mites, and pollen. This way a GMC Aircon system can benefit everyone that uses it.

Convenient heat

Many modern AC systems not only provide the ability to keep a room cool, they can also heat it too. During those cooler days and evenings, an airconditioner can be switched on to provide immediate heat, once again proving that AC can always provide the right temperature.

Security

One of the lesser spoken about benefits of air conditioning is the improved security that a system can bring during the hot weather. Without AC, windows and doors usually have to be left open to try to cool down a room; this obviously leaves homes and businesses open to opportunist thieves. With an airconditioner, windows and doors can remain closed, which automatically enhances safety.

gmc-5

Cons

Expense

Probably the biggest drawback of airconditioners is their expense. While smaller units are very much affordable, systems for large spaces can be quite costly. However, if you are a business, the cost can be offset against a rise in productivity from employees working in ideal conditions.

Noise

A common complaint of airconditioner units is the noise that they give off when in operation. While older models can be loud and quite irritating if you are trying to sleep, our systems are specially developed to offer excellent noise reduction for a quieter operation.

Lack of performance

It is important when buying an airconditioner that you purchase one that meets your needs. Investing a small unit for a large space will result in a lack of performance.

Maintenance

Airconditioner systems require regular maintenance. Fortunately, if you buy from us, maintenance is something we can help with; however, smaller portable units purchased elsewhere will often require self-maintenance and is important that you know what you are doing.

gmclogoThere you have it – the pros and the cons of airconditioner systems. Having weighed up both, I am sure you would agree that the advantages of owning a GMC Aircon unit far outweigh the disadvantages. Besides, when temperatures really heat up, it’s pretty hard to put a price on cool air!

Anyone that owns, or has benefitted from, air conditioning units will agree that they are pretty great things. Not only do they provide the cool air we need when temperatures are soaring, they can reduce humidity to keep us comfortable and filter the air so that allergies do not flare up.

One of the only downsides to air conditioners is the fact that they must be regularly maintained. However, if you know what you’re doing, keeping the filters, coils, and fins in perfect working condition will not prove a problem. As we are all about providing the best service for our customers, here is the GMC Aircon guide to maintaining air conditioning units.

Air conditioning filters

All air conditioning units have filters that must be routinely cleaned or replaced to ensure the efficiency and performance of a system. Filters often become clogged with dirt, preventing optimum airflow, which in turn affects efficiency greatly. The longer filters are left unchecked, the more performance will decrease. When airflow becomes obstructed, air can often carry dirt into the evaporator coil, affecting the heat-absorbing capabilities of the machine and leaving you with a warm and sticky room!

By cleaning or replacing a clogged filter, efficiency can be improved by as much as 15 per cent. For room air conditioning units, the filter can generally be found in the grille. For central air conditioners, filters will be trickier to access and are typically located in the wall, ceiling or inside of the air conditioner itself.

Depending on your type of air conditioning system, you may be able to reuse the filter. If you need to replace a filter, you will usually find that they are inexpensive. Always check the filter of your air conditioner every 1-2 months.

Air conditioning coils

Like the filter, the evaporator and condenser coils of air-conditioning units tend to collect dirt over time. A clean filter will help reduce the dirt collected by the evaporator coil, but not completely. If your condenser coils are located on the outside of the building, you may notice that dirt can build up quicker; however, this can be prevented with a once or twice yearly clean. Always try to minimise the dirt and debris near an air conditioning unit. In addition, it can be worth investing in a ‘fin comb’ to help repair bent coil fins. Check out this great slideshare of Airconditioning Systems.

Unclogging drains

A unit’s drain channels can often become clogged, which will affect humidity reducing capabilities. This can be easily fixed by passing a stiff wire through the channels.

gmc_jkp5828

Airconditioning seals

In the cooler seasons, you should take the time to check on the seals between the air conditioner and the window/wall. A routine inspection to make sure the frame is in contact with the system’s casing will prevent moisture from breaking a seal and allowing cold air to escape a room.

Professional maintenance

For smaller air conditioning units, maintaining a system is fairly straightforward; however, for large industrial units used for businesses and schools, it is worthwhile investing in professional help – this is something we can help with. An experienced air-conditioning technician will be able to find and repair any problems and ensure that a system is working as it should. You can also check out our guide here on benefits of airconditioning systems.

Air conditioning units are essential in helping people cope with the hot conditions; by carrying out regular maintenance, you will be able to benefit from cool air all year round! If you need any more help regarding an air conditioner, do not hesitate to call GMC Aircon on 012 661-1173 today or contact us here.

Heat pumps are the most effective heating and cooling system available for use in both residential and commercial applications such as hotels, retail complexes, office buildings and even inside your own home.

This established technology has been used for decades to provide a low-cost, safe heating and cooling solution. They provide efficient cooling in the hot summer months and fantastic heating in the winter.

Heat pumps have the ability to tap the natural heat produced by the earth and use it to heat any room or building, the only energy required is to move the heat within the ducting system into the rooms of the building. Therefore, we can say that heat pumps supply more energy than they consume. This energy comes in the form of clean, abundant heat without polluting the environment with unnecessary excessive carbon emissions.

Today’s climate is changing and reducing our impact on the environment by limiting our carbon foot print, is the responsibility of corporates and individuals everywhere. Using a heat pump system to handle your cooling and heating needs is a sure-fire way to reduce your energy consumption and in turn, reduce the carbon emissions that you produce.

GMC air-source heat pump solutions

ppimage3

All of GMC’s heat pump products are manufactured in compliance with ISO9001/2008 quality management system requirements. GMC ensures that both water and electricity systems are completely isolating, eliminating the risk of electrical fault due to water entering the electrical system, making them safer than traditional electrical water heaters.

A heat pump is able to supply heated air and water and a quarter of the cost of traditional heaters, saving you up to 60% of your current electricity usage. The heat pump is controlled by micro-computers that give you full control of the system and its settings.

ppimage2

The system has memory for your preferred settings of temperature and humidity, as well as timer and auto stop/start function, making it a ‘set-and-forget’ system that will keep your living environment perfectly balanced at any time of day or night, at any time of year.

How it works

The operating principle diagramof a heat pump is similar to traditional air-con systems in the fact that it uses waters tendency to expand as it is heated. The heat pump will draw warm air in from outside and pass it through the fin-coil evaporating system where the refrigerant then extracts the heat from the air.

The refrigerant is then compressed to a high temperature, high-pressure gas by the compressor and then the heat energy transferred into the water by means of a tube-in-shell heat exchanger. The refrigerant in the system then returns to normal and the cycle is repeated.

The environment

Global climate change has become a serious issue that affects every nation across the globe. It is our responsibility to curb the contributing environmental pollution produced by our lifestyle. Using an air-source heat pump is a great way to reduce your energy consumption, thereby reducing your carbon footprint and your impact on the world around you, while improving your quality of life and convenience in your home or office building.
